We live in a world where people are constantly striving for approval and validation, and the idea of being “chosen” brings an incredible sense of peace and belonging, not to mention that being chosen boosts our self-esteem. The Bible reminds us that as believers in Christ, we have been chosen by God Himself. This amazing and profound truth has the power to transform our perspective on life, our relationships, and our purpose in the world.
1. Chosen for Relationship
The Bible makes it clear that God’s choice to love us is not based on our achievements, our background, or our qualifications. Ephesians 1:4-5 (NLT) says, “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”
Before time began, God chose us to be in relationship with Him. This wasn’t a random act or a result of human effort; it was a deliberate decision rooted in His infinite love. It is mind-blowing to know that we are not an afterthought or a mistake, but part of God’s eternal plan to express His glory!
This divine selection should fill us with awe and gratitude. Knowing that God chose us means relieves us of the need to strive for His approval. Instead, we can rest in the assurance that we are loved unconditionally.
2. Chosen for Purpose
Being chosen by God isn’t just about belonging—it’s also about purpose. In 1 Peter 2:9 (NLT), we read: “But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.”
As God’s chosen people, we are called to live differently. Our lives should reflect His light and goodness in a dark and broken world. This doesn’t mean we are perfect, but it does mean we are set apart for His glory.
Our purpose is not just to enjoy the benefits of being chosen but to actively participate in God’s mission. We are ambassadors of His love, grace, and truth to those around us. Every conversation, act of kindness, and moment of obedience can point others to the hope we have in Christ.
3. Chosen Despite Our Weakness
One of the most beautiful aspects of being chosen by God is that it has nothing to do with our own merit. In 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 (NLT), Paul writes: “Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.”
God often chooses the unlikely, the overlooked, and the broken to accomplish His purposes. This means our weaknesses and imperfections do not disqualify us; rather, they become opportunities for God to display His strength and glory.
It helps to remember that, among countless examples, Moses was a stammering shepherd whom God chose to lead His people out of Egypt, and David was just a young shepherd boy chosen to be king. Shepherds were typically regarded as being on the lowest rung of biblical society, but their stories remind us that God’s choice is not based on worldly standards but on His sovereign will.
4. Living as God’s Chosen People
Understanding that we are chosen by God should influence the way we live. Colossians 3:12 (NLT) offers practical guidance: “Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”
As God’s chosen ones, our lives should be marked by love and compassion. We are called to reflect His character in our daily interactions, choosing forgiveness over bitterness and humility over pride.
This isn’t always easy, but when we remember that we are chosen and dearly loved, it becomes our joy to extend that same love to others.
5. Chosen for Eternity
Finally, being chosen by God gives us the hope of eternal life. Jesus Himself said in John 15:16 (NLT), “You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.”
Our chosenness is not temporary—it’s eternal. Jesus chose us to bear fruit that will last, and He has secured our place in His Kingdom forever. This eternal perspective helps us navigate the challenges of life with faith and hope.
To be chosen by God is both a privilege and a calling. It reminds us of our worth, gives us purpose, and fills us with hope. In response, let us live as His chosen people—reflecting His love, sharing His light, and trusting His plan.
Take a moment today to thank God for choosing you. Rest in His love, and ask Him to help you fulfill the purpose for which you were chosen.
Blessings on you and yours, Jim Black
